Board Positions are Available for 2027-2028 Term
The Vashon-Maury Community Council will elect directors to its Board this fall, and we are seeking at least three additional candidates to complete a full slate.
Please consider serving—or encouraging someone you believe would be a thoughtful, community-minded director—to submit a Self-Nomination Form by October 1. This deadline allows us to include links to candidate profiles in the October Council Invitation Letter.
Serving on the V-MCC Board is a meaningful opportunity to act locally and see the results of your work. Board members help provide an inclusive forum for island issues, organize action around shared challenges, learn more about the island, and build relationships with fellow residents.
At a minimum, directors are expected to:

Attend Board meetings on the first Thursday of each month, either in person or via Zoom.

Attend Council meetings on the third Thursday of each month, either in person or via Zoom.

Be responsive to Board-related email.

Support one of V-MCC’s thirteen sectors as a Board member, or serve as a sector liaison who helps amplify islanders’ voices and encourages participation.

At a time when many people feel isolated or frustrated with politics, local civic work offers a practical way to connect with others, preserve what is valuable about our island, and help shape its future. If this sounds like a good fit, please submit the Self-Nomination Form by October 1 and attend the October 15 Board Meeting to introduce yourself.
Elections Process and Timeline
Every two years, V-MCC elects up to eight Board members. We expect five current directors to seek re-election, so we need at least three new candidates for a full slate of eight elected directors. The newly elected Board may appoint up to four additional directors.
Electronic ballots will be sent by email in the second half of October. Candidates will be introduced at the October 15 Council meeting at Vashon Presbyterian Church, and results will be announced at the Annual Council Meeting on November 19. If eight or fewer candidates run, voters will consider each candidate individually. If more than eight candidates run, the election will use ranked-choice voting.

A Vashon Island resident with my family since 2000, I hold a Ph.D. in social psychology with a minor in organizational management. My expertise lies in decision-making and program evaluation, gained from a 28-year career in child welfare research. I currently work as a senior researcher at the Washington State Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF).

I get the sense that as islanders, we acknowledge that no one is coming to rescue us. We need to look internally and create the community from within. We live in a time where our solutions and work need to be focused where they can have the most local impact. At the state and federal level, resources are becoming more and more difficult to access, and we need to strengthen our ability to care for each other.

I am a 4th generation islander and a mother of three school aged children. I deeply care about our community and our Island spirit.
My family has been in service to our island community for generations.
Doug Ostrom
I was born and raised on Vashon, but I lived in the East and in Asia for 40 years. I visited Vashon once or twice year during this period. I have lived on Vashon continuously since 2010. I graduated from Vashon High School in 1965 and served two terms as a commissioner of the Vashon Park District. I have a PhD from the University of Michigan and speak Japanese.

Meg Thompson is Education Director at Vashon Repertory Theater and long-time youth arts educator. She lives on Vashon with her son, Gotham, and her German Shepherd, Teela. Meg brings her enthusiasm for youth and arts to the council, as well as a special interest in the development of affordable housing for our community.
