About

Committees

Last updated: September 14, 2023

V-MCC is a Washington organization dedicated to the community of Vashon-Maury Island. Volunteers are essential to keeping the organization running and healthy. There are multiple ways in which you can volunteer. One of the best is to join a committee. If you are interested in other ways to help, please contact Diane Emerson at dianeEmerson@yahoo.com

Transportation committee

The Transportation Committee has formed to study and recommend solutions to our Island's transportation needs.

The Interim chair of the Transportation Committee is Jake Jacobovitch, recently retired from King County, and a past president of the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council.  To be part of this new committee, please contact Jake Jacobovitch:

Post Office committee

The chair of the committee is Jim Garrison. The next meeting will be held as needed. To attend, please contact Jim Garrison at jgburtonwater@gmail.com

Affordable Housing committee

Affordable Housing continues to be a top issue of concern to the Island, for many reasons. It ties into the Post Office problems, homelessness, inability for organizations and businesses to hire and retain staff, and more. So the Council has an Affordable Housing committee to work on these difficult issues, and their many facets. Please attend a meeting, and join if this issue is important to you, too.

There are two Co-Chairs of this important committee: Art Chippendale and Terry Sullivan.  The committee now meets the 1st Wednesday of the month. The next meeting of the Affordable Housing Committee will be Wednesday, October 4, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Zoom.

 Communications
Committee

The Communications Committee has been designing and publishing this website, writing about and promoting upcoming meetings in the print, radio, and social media, plus designing and putting up posters in the community, in both English and Spanish (when we can find someone to do the translating for us).

The Communications Committee is composed of two teams: the Website Team and the Outreach Team. The Website team designs and updates the website. The Outreach team promotes our meetings on many different social media platforms, the newspaper, radio, e-mail, community calendars, and posters. There are current openings for someone to help with:

  1. Facebook

  2. Other social media platforms

  3. Other media

  4. Posters

  5. This Wix webiste

Diane Emerson is the current chair of the Communications Committee. There is an opening for the Co-chair to handle social media, newspaper, radio, and posters.   To attend a website team meeting, to inquire about becoming a member of the Commications Committee, or to see minutes of the meetings, please contact Diane Emerson at dianeEmerson@yahoo.com

Vashon Town Plan Committee

This committee is in the process of being formed. Here is the charter of the committee:

The Vashon Town Plan of 1994 (VTP) was developed by the VMICC Town Plan Committee with assistance from King County and was adopted in 1996 as a subarea plan of the King County Comprehensive Plan.  Although the VTP has largely achieved its intent to reinforce Vashon’s traditional rural town character, as well as the 1986 Vashon Community Plan’s goal of maintaining the town’s rural character, the VTP has not been very successful in addressing the community’s desire to provide more affordable housing and to enable people to walk to work.

The purpose of the 2023-4 V-MCC Vashon Town Plan Committee is to work with King County to modify the VTP to enable more affordable housing while maintaining the town’s rural character.  These modifications are intended to be adopted as part of King County’s 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update.
